Winter Fishing on the Big Horn River in Thermopolis, WY

One of the most frequently-asked questions we get is "What is the best time of year to fish this river?" And without hesitation, our answer is "February."

You won't be fishing tiny dries to rising fish, or get a big eat on a streamer, as the fish sit deep and are lethargic during the coldest parts of winter. But after a few warm days the trout begin to feed on small nymphs, scuds, sowbugs and midges.
This is also pre-spawn time for the Rainbows and Cutthroat and they absolutely gorge themselves on the river's bounty.
